Transform Your Curls: It’s All About Moisture

“Moisture” is a word that seems to be used on a daily basis when talking about Curly Hair.

As owner and curl specialist of Moisture Salon in upstate NY in Schenectady, I took the leap and attended cosmetology school ( I call it beauty school. Showing my age!).  Seven years ago I told everyone that one day I would open a salon named Moisture Salon. Why that name?  Because moisture is key to healthy hair and that’s what I am about:  healthy hair. Not only curly hair but hair in general. I just never imagined that my dream and vision would happened early in my new career. I opened Moisture Salon 3 years ago in May 2013. The only addition to the name was “where curls begin”. I never imagined my salon would cater to curls only.

So let’s talk about the importance of moisture in textural hair.

Moisture will help in the healing process of dry brittle hair. With wash and go styles for textural hair moisture is key. moisturesalonnaturalcurls

At the time of applying your products in your hair, first cleanse your hair and, if possible detox it first, too. Detox it from harsh silicones and oils that will rest on the hair shaft. Conventional products leave those ingredients right ON THE HAIR. Silicones and most oils will block any moisture to penetrate into the hair. That’s why we stay away from them.

For best results, pick a conditioner will lots of slip like Innersense Organic Beauty Color Radiance Daily Conditioner.  Section hair and a apply generous from roots to ends.  In order to achieve the proper amount of moisture in the hair, make sure you leave this product in the hair.

Next, add your fillers.  Choose from Quiet Calm Curl Control,  I Create Volume or Inner Peace Whipped Creme Texturizer.

Then add your sealer of I Create Hold.

This is a perfect cocktail of products to maintain proper moisture. By adding these other products to the routine will help with healing time, which allows your hair to become hydrated and full of moisture.

Also remember hair full with moisture will make hair lay down and not out.  More water and moisture in your hair will help elongate certain curl types.

What most people forget to do:  apply other moisture to hair on Days 2, 3 or 4.  Our hair is a living fiber and dry to begin. If we starve the hair from any moisture, the hair dries out again and the cycle continues.  I recommend a nice spritz of Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner or a mixture of one part Color Radiance Daily Conditioner and 3 parts of water to spritz in the hair daily to refresh dry hair.

This process will help maintain proper hydration and moisture in hair.  Moisture is the most important element in our life for all things. We need it to live, grow and maintain gorgeous healthy curls.

I’ve shared some great tips for healthy hair, and do want you to remember:  moisture can only penetrate into the hair by eliminating those bad ingredients. Products with silicones, parabens and sulfates are moisture blockers. They block moisture from the hair and prevent hair from absorbing the essential things curls need. Once you start a healthy and hydrating routine, your hair will reward you with amazing curls, moisture and hydrated scalp!

Moisture is essential to our life with textural hair, and really for all hair types. I have a saying to clients, “the wetter the better“. Remember that and use it. I can guarantee you successful curls. Now that you know moisture is the secret to curly hair success, I look forward to seeing your results.
