Clean And Now Certified Carbon Neutral!
Innersense Organic Beauty is proud to announce we’re Certified Carbon Neutral through Climate Neutral, a non profit organization that helps companies measure and offset their carbon footprint. A fellow 1% for the Planet partner, Climate Neutral is committed to providing the tools to allow companies to take action against climate change.
As part of this relationship, we don’t just offset our emissions but we commit to reducing our footprint year over year. How do we achieve our carbon neutral certification? We answer your questions below.
HOW DID INNERSENSE ORGANIC BEAUTY ACHIEVE CARBON NEUTRALITY?
We offset our entire 2020 footprint by purchasing carbon credits to fund climate change solutions. We also support a variety of projects. In China, the project we supported focused on household biogas digesters (which anaerobically decompose biodegradable materials). In Uganda, we support more efficient stoves, and in the United States we support landfill methane capture. These projects are independently verified, ensuring they’re effectively protecting our climate.
HOW DOES OFFSETTING HELP FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
Offsetting drives investment into climate change solutions. The United Nations projects that it will cost roughly between $1 and $3 trillion USD annually to avoid the worst effects of climate change. As more and more companies mobilize, offsets can greatly speed up the rate at which this finance gap is filled, accelerating the global transition to a low carbon economy.
Oftentimes projects which generate carbon credits will not only reduce emissions but also simultaneously achieve a wide variety of other social and environmental benefits (known as co-benefits). These co-benefits are commonly aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and support areas such as biodiversity conservation, boosting rural income, providing clean water, protecting the ozone layer, and much more.
HOW DO COOKING SOURCES FIT INTO CARBON NEUTRALITY?
For many developing countries, inefficient stoves can be time and cost-intensive, and lead to unhealthy levels of indoor air pollution. When we offset our 2020 carbon footprint, we supported a project that helped communities in Uganda transition to using more efficient cookstoves, which reduced emissions, improved indoor air quality, and supported the health of local communities.
WHY CAPTURE METHANE FROM LANDFILLS?
When you think of what causes climate change, you probably think of carbon dioxide. But did you know that there are five other greenhouse gases that are responsible for changing our climate? One of the most potent gases is methane, which is roughly 30 times stronger as a greenhouse gas compared with carbon dioxide over the course of 100 years. When we offset our 2020 carbon footprint, we supported a US-based landfill gas project aimed to prevent methane emissions from entering our atmosphere. The gas is then used to power local homes, providing a reliable local energy source.
