Advocating For Safe Cosmetics: Power In Numbers

Early adopters of the safe cosmetics movement, Innersense Organic Beauty founders developed their own clean hair care line over 15 years ago. The “clean beauty” movement had yet to be named! Our participation in the Counteract Coalition is critical to ensuring that the health and wellness of consumers are protected.

This collective of 20 clean beauty brands allows us to amplify our message of safe, healthy personal care products and safe cosmetics as a natural extension of our company’s mission to create clean, pure, beautiful hair care.

A COLLECTIVE OF BRANDS, ONE VOICE

We quickly realised there was more work to be done, and that’s when we decided to lend our voice to advocate for safer personal care products for everyone. As members of the Counteract Coalition, we’re part of an amazing collaboration of high-performance beauty brands lobbying for safer cosmetic ingredient laws.

The Counteract Coalition supports legislation such as The Personal Care Safety Act (S.1113) in the USA, which aims to give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate personal care products and establishes a process for achieving this oversight.

The inspiration of Beautycounter founder and CEO Gregg Renfrew, the Counteract Coalition includes the following companies:

• Annmarie Gianni Skin Care

• Biossance

• Côte

• Credo

• Follain

• Goddess Garden

• Innersense Organic Beauty

• Josie Maran

• May Lindstrom

• OSEA

• Peet Rivko

• Primal Pit Paste

• Rahua Hair Care

• rms beauty

We Want Cosmetics Safety Standards Even Safer

Europe and Canada have set the safety standards by leading the way and adopting safe cosmetics legislation. It may be surprising to find out that our USA laws governing ingredients used in products like lotions, shampoos, and makeup have been virtually unchanged since 1938!

By joining in partnership with our beauty industry peers, we broaden our impact by using a collective voice to advance safe cosmetics ingredient reform. Equally important, we also advocate for ingredient transparency and disclosure legislation. With these efforts, it’s our goal to see this information in the marketplace so everyone can make informed personal care product choices with peace of mind.
